Description
A beautifully crafted vintage 1940s oak bookcase. This wonderfully detailed, mid century, industrial, legal document shelving, by Gunn, features 5 shelf cabinets with doors that open by sliding them up and over.
Antique Barristers Bookcases were first seen in the late Victorian period and were usually stacking with cabinet glazed doors, in a similar style to Globe Wernicke bookcases. They were designed to store books or other office documents and were commonly seen in solicitors offices, libraries or schools. They are extremely collectable as they can house a large book collection and are quite unique in their design. The shelves needn’t be used only for books though. Any collection of items can be stored and displayed within the separate sections.
The CC41 Utility logo was a British Board of Trade requirement that appeared on footwear, utility furniture, textiles, and utility clothing for just over ten years from 1941. CC41 designated that the item met the government’s austerity regulations.
