Stylish and functional, this is the classic Staples Ladderax mid century shelving system. The black metal uprights and easy removable supports, allow the teak cabinetry to be positioned wherever required. This is a very versatile piece of retro furniture. Ladderax adjustable, modular shelving systems are a true mid century design classic and are very highly sought after today. Ladderax was designed by Robert Heal in 1964 and manufactured by Staples of Cricklewood in London for sale in high end stores like Harrods, Heals, etc. Heal was influenced by the Danish school of design. This mid century Scandinavian design movement was all about reinterpreting simple, linear shapes from earlier design periods and making them ‘simpler’.

This system features three bays of Ladderax separated by black metal ladders. The cabinetry consists of two single drawer units, a record cabinet for your vinyl collection and a 3 drawer chest of drawers. Each of the units is lockable and the key comes with the set up. The system can be configured in many ways. It can perform as a straightforward sideboard unit with lots and lots of storage options or the units can be split to leave two single bays that can be used as fantastic bedside cabinets. Alternatively, you can satisfy your inner DJ by configuring the cabinets for use as a so-cool set-up for your turntable and record collection. Remember that all the cabinets can be moved around and set at different heights to suit your needs.

The Ladderax system combines upright ‘ladders’ that support shelves and cabinets, which sit on steel rods that hook onto the rungs of the ladders. One of the great benefits of Ladderax over its Scandinavian counterparts is that it doesn’t need to be attached to the wall.

The whole set up breaks down easily when it needs to be moved and is so simple to rebuild. You can also be clever and source spare cabinets, rods, etc to allow you to turn, for example, two separate ‘bays’, into a single, larger unit of three bays without adding additional ladders. If you do come across an extra ladder, again, you can make, say, two bays into three by adding the extra ladder and rearranging your existing shelves and cabinets.
