  • Description

Stylish and functional, this is the classic Staples Ladderax mid century shelving system. The black metal uprights and easy removable supports, allow the teak cabinetry to be positioned wherever required. This is a very versatile piece of retro furniture. Ladderax adjustable, modular shelving systems are a true mid century design classic and are very highly sought after today. Ladderax was designed by Robert Heal in 1964 and manufactured by Staples of Cricklewood in London for sale in high end stores like Harrods, Heals, etc. Heal was influenced by the Danish school of design. This mid century Scandinavian design movement was all about reinterpreting simple, linear shapes from earlier design periods and making them ‘simpler’.

This system features three full height bays of Ladderax, with seven shelves, separated by black metal ladders. One of the shelves can be set at an angle and used as a writing slope or as a place to display books or to hold sheet music. The cabinetry consists of two glass-fronted display cabinets, a drop-front cabinet that can be used as a bureau or drinks cabinet and a second drop-front cabinet that can be used for your favourite LPs or as a general filing cabinet. Two of the cabinets are lockable and the key is present. You can use your imagination to repurpose the cabinets for different uses. The glass cabinets can be employed as glazed bookcases or the glass shelves (and doors, if you like) can be removed and the cabinets used to store a larger vinyl collection. Remember that the cabinets and shelves can be moved around and set at different heights to suit your needs.

The Ladderax system combines upright ‘ladders’ that support shelves and cabinets, which sit on steel rods that hook onto the rungs of the ladders. One of the great benefits of Ladderax over its Scandinavian counterparts is that it doesn’t need to be attached to the wall. The whole set up breaks down easily when it needs to be moved and is so simple to rebuild. You can also be clever and source extra cabinets, rods, shelves and/or ladders to allow you add to and alter your configuration.

This is a stunning set up in great condition. As you'd expect, Ladderax systems always show signs of age and use. Please ask if you'd like any further information re condition.
