Description
A Set of 4 stacking Hillestak chairs designed by Robin Day for Hille in the 1950’s. The chairs are made from steam bent ply wood with a walnut veneer on a beech frame.
Originally conceived as low-cost furniture, the range was inspired by the plywood work of Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames and proved to be one of Hille’s early successes.
The Hille furniture company was started in the East End of London in 1906 by Salamon Hille. Hille’s most famous designer was, of course, Robin Day. From the very outset Day was given carte blanche to design whatever he wanted and to have prototypes built. Day is most famously remembered for his best selling product, the Polypropylene chair, the first of which was the polyside chair in 1963.
These super vintage chairs are solid, in very nice condition and ready for use in your home. Hardly noticeable but there is a little historic cracking to one of the seat bases (see photo). The break is stable and unlikely to worsen.
