Description
This mid century sideboard was made by Greaves and Thomas, a firm who created high end designer furniture for the British market. The sideboard has a bank of three drawers to its right hand side. To the left of the drawers are a pair of shelved cupboard spaces. Eye-catching design features include the rarely-found brass handles, the height and shape of its legs and the manner in which the drawer and door fronts are slightly recessed into the cabinet itself. The shorter legs of this piece mean that, although compact in length, the taller than standard cabinet offers great storage space within. A space-saving yet capacious little sideboard.
Greaves & Thomas was a London based company with a history dating back to the early 1900’s. In the early years the company specialised in lounge furniture and upholstery. By the mid 20th century the company was producing a range of high end contemporary furniture – including sideboards, armchairs and even bedroom mirrors.
By the mid 1950’s and 60’s Greaves & Thomas, like many other British companies, hired trained designers to create contemporary furniture. Walter Cornell designed many pieces for the company during this time, his work featured clean lines and a Danish influence. In 1967 Greaves & Thomas was purchased by Schreiber to add quality and prestige to their furniture offering.
