  • Description

A beautifully crafted vintage bookcase. This wonderfully detailed bookcase by Globe Wernicke, features 5 shelf cabinets with doors that open by sliding them up and over. Three taller cabinets and two shorter.

Antique Barristers Bookcases were first seen in the late Victorian period and were usually stacking with glazed cabinet doors. They were designed to store books or other office documents and were commonly seen in solicitors offices, libraries or schools. They are extremely collectable as they can house a large book collection and are quite unique in their design. The shelves needn't be used only for books though. Any collection of items can be stored and displayed within the separate sections.

Globe-Wernicke was first established in 1899 when Otto Wernicke bought the Globe Company. Wernicke also acquired the Fred Macey Co which also made the well known stacking barrister bookcases. Globe Wernicke was the main maker and supplier of this type of stacking bookcase until it fell into receivership in 1932 as a result of The Depression. The business then reopened in 1934. Globe Wernicke had production facilities in the United States, Canada, Britain, France and Germany.

The bookcase is easily transported as each of its 5 sections can be easily separated. You'll want to sit this piece with its back to a wall. Rest assured that it is completely structurally sound and intact but its tall height and narrow depth mean that it's most at home with a wall behind it. Super shelving with all of the patina and signs of age and use that you'd expect, and want.
