This classic mid-century Nathan dining set comes with 2 carver style armchairs and 4 standard chairs and extends to accommodate 6 people, if required. The 4 standard chairs are cleverly designed so that they sit neatly under the edge of the table top when the table is unextended. Space saving and… very cool to look at. A beautifully designed & crafted extending dining table, this vintage item has that stylish retro look to it. The table and chairs are inspired by the famous Danish ‘Roundette’ dining set by Hans Olsen.
Nathan furniture was established in 1916 by Barnett Nathan. His vision was to design beautiful, elegant furniture, offering quality and value. In 1963, Nathan went Scandinavian. Their advertisements proclaimed ‘Scandinavian Design By Nathan’. Nathan’s first range of teak furniture was called ‘Citadel’. It had a classic Scandinavian low, long sideboard, which was simple and elegant with no decoration other than plain recessed handles. At 6 feet in length, it was still large and provided ample storage, but was more suited to a semi-detached house than the massive 7ft sideboards that some of the more expensive firms sold.
Nathan introduced several other dining suites on the same theme: modern, Scandinavian inspired, designs in teak. All began with the letter “C”: Corsican, Corinthian and Cortina. In the late 60s Nathan moved further upmarket. Many manufacturers were making teak furniture, so designs needed to be original. They introduced several new designs in teak. These new designs continued into the early 70s. Nathan then took a different course, with their furniture of the 70s acquiring a more traditional look.
The dining set is structurally sound and is in nice original, unrestored, condition. Some of the pegs that help hold the leaves snugly together are broken or missing so the leaves don’t sit together as snugly as when the set was new. We’ve discounted the dining set to reflect this.
