Description
This mid century sideboard was made by Greaves and Thomas, a firm who created high end designer furniture for the British market. The sideboard has a bank of three drawers, the top drawer with felt-lined cutlery divider. To the right of the drawers is a double cupboard drinks cabinet. One of the doors has a drop-front action with a Formica lined surface where bottles and glasses can be safely placed without marking any of the wooden surfaces. To the left of the drawers is another single, shelved cupboard space. A beautiful piece of cabinetry that is both stylish and capacious.
Greaves & Thomas was a London based company with a history dating back to the early 1900’s. In the early years the company specialised in lounge furniture and upholstery. By the mid 20th century the company was producing a range of high end contemporary furniture – including sideboards, armchairs and even bedroom mirrors.
By the mid 1950’s and 60’s Greaves & Thomas, like many other British companies, hired trained designers to create contemporary furniture. Walter Cornell designed many pieces for the company during this time, his work featured clean lines and a Danish influence. In 1967 Greaves & Thomas was purchased by Schreiber to add quality and prestige to their furniture offering.
The exterior of this piece is in super condition as we’ve had it refinished by a professional furniture restorer. There are some signs of use in the top drawer and within the drinks cabinet. We’ve also closed off a gap in the backboard (only noticeable from the rear). We’ve reflected this in the price and the sideboard remains an eye-catching piece. Sturdy and strong and in great condition, externally. The shelves within the cupboard spaces are removeable.
