Description
This mid century sideboard was made by Greaves and Thomas, a firm who created high end designer furniture for the British market. The sideboard has a bank of three drawers, the top drawer with felt-lined cutlery divider. To the right of the drawers is a double cupboard drinks cabinet. One of the doors has a drop-front action with a Formica lined surface where bottles and glasses can be safely placed without marking any of the wooden surfaces. To the left of the bank of drawers is another single, shelved cupboard space. The shelf within this cupboard space is removeable. A beautiful piece of cabinetry that is both stylish and capacious.
Greaves & Thomas was a London based company with a history dating back to the early 1900’s. In the early years the company specialised in lounge furniture and upholstery. By the mid 20th century the company was producing a range of high end contemporary furniture – including sideboards, armchairs and even bedroom mirrors.
By the mid 1950’s and 60’s Greaves & Thomas, like many other British companies, hired trained designers to create contemporary furniture. Walter Cornell designed many pieces for the company during this time, his work featured clean lines and a Danish influence. In 1967 Greaves & Thomas was purchased by Schreiber to add quality and prestige to their furniture offering.
Structurally sound and in super condition with, as you’d expect, some signs of age and use.
