Description
This mid century sideboard was made by Greaves and Thomas, a firm who created high end furniture for the British market. The sideboard has two long drawers that sit above the cabinet spaces below. To the left of the sideboard is a drinks cabinet space with removable glass shelf and a Formica lined surface where bottles and glasses can be safely placed without marking any of the wooden surfaces. To the right sits a shelved double cupboard. A beautiful piece of cabinetry that is both stylish and capacious.
Greaves & Thomas was a London based company with a history dating back to the early 1900’s. In the early years the company specialised in lounge furniture and upholstery. By the mid 20th century the company was producing a range of high end contemporary furniture – including sideboards, armchairs and even bedroom mirrors.
By the mid 1950’s and 60’s Greaves & Thomas, like many other British companies, hired trained designers to create contemporary furniture. Walter Cornell designed many pieces for the company during this time, his work featured clean lines and a Danish influence. In 1967 Greaves & Thomas was purchased by Schreiber to add quality and prestige to their furniture offering.
Structurally sound and in nice unrestored condition, with signs of age and use. We’ve priced the piece to reflect this.
