Description
Stylish and functional, this is the classic Staples Ladderax mid century shelving system. The black metal uprights and easy removable supports, allow the teak cabinetry to be positioned wherever required. This is a very versatile piece of retro furniture. Ladderax adjustable, modular shelving systems are a true mid century design classic and are very highly sought after today. Ladderax was designed by Robert Heal in 1964 and manufactured by Staples of Cricklewood in London for sale in high end stores like Harrods, Heals, etc. Heal was influenced by the Danish school of design. This mid century Scandinavian design movement was all about reinterpreting simple, linear shapes from earlier design periods and making them ‘simpler’.
This system features one full height bay of Ladderax with wardrobe unit plus two shallower and one shorter bay of shelving separated by black metal ladders. The set-up includes 15 shelves and these are split into two different wood tones (see photos). The rarely found wardrobe cabinet has shelves inside and a clever little system for hanging clothes. The wardrobe is lockable and the key is present. Remember that the shelves can be moved around and set at different heights to suit your needs and the bays can be configured in different arrangements too. There is also the option of splitting up the bays if you’d like to feature ladderax in two different places.
The Ladderax system combines upright ‘ladders’ that support shelves and cabinets, which sit on steel rods that hook onto the rungs of the ladders. One of the great benefits of Ladderax over its Scandinavian counterparts is that it doesn’t need to be attached to the wall. The whole set up breaks down easily when it needs to be moved and is so simple to rebuild. You can also be clever and source extra cabinets, rods, shelves and/or ladders to allow you add to and alter your configuration.
