A pair of Robin Day Armchairs designed for Hille in the 1960’s. The polypropylene chair’s rolled edges ensure that the fixings are kept out of sight from the front view and the generously wide seat with built in arms makes it incredibly comfortable.
The Hille furniture company was started in the East End of London in 1906 by Salamon Hille. Hille’s most famous designer was, of course, Robin Day. From the very outset Day was given carte blanche to design whatever he wanted and to have prototypes built. Day is most famously remembered for his best selling product, the Polypropylene chair, the first of which was the polyside chair in 1963.
My camera found it tricky to capture the eye-popping colour of the chairs. They are a beautiful bright orange colour, in almost ‘as new’ condition with the Hille manufacturer tags still attached.
