Description
These are some of the most elegant teak dining chairs we have seen from Danish designer Johannes Andersen. Danish furniture maker Udlum Mobelfabrik exemplified simple, organic Scandinavian style and this is evident in these gorgeous chairs. The company often collaborated with leading architects. This set (including 2 carver style armchairs) by Johannes Andersen marks a high point in the company’s history. Every detail has been considered in the construction of these chairs, from the single curved back-strut to the subtle tapered legs which are elegantly framed in the original oatmeal fabric.
While information on designer Johannes Andersen is limited and difficult to verify, it is believed that he was born in 1903 in Aarhus, Denmark, and that he initially apprenticed as a cabinetmaker. He went on to work for many years in a number of workshops before opening his own architectural and furniture workshop in the 1930s. Andersen’s designs span seating, tables, and storage in well-crafted materials, such as rosewood and teak. His career paralleled the midcentury’s growing appreciation for Danish furniture designs, and he attracted international attention—particularly for coffee tables like the highly sculptural Smile Table.
These stylish chairs are sturdy and strong and the wood, fabric and cushions are in great condition. Of little importance but one of the little wooden screw caps is missing. Two of the chairs have faint blemishes to the fabric. These will likely diminish or disappear if gently cleaned/shampooed (see photos).
