  • Description

A stunning set of 6 Poul Volther dining chairs with paper cord seats. These were designed for the Danish manufacturer Frem Rojle in the 1960s and are made from solid teak.

Volther originally trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Royal Danish Academy School of Arts & Crafts in Copenhagen. Over the years, Volther also taught at the Royal Danish Academy School of Design, influencing hundreds of young designers along the way. Through the course of the postwar years, Volther’s design work exhibited an aversion to short-lived trends in favor of cool, functionalist aesthetics driven by Bauhaus-influenced, rationalist design thinking. He was always eager to try new approaches and experiment with new materials.

Poul Volther belonged to a generation of Danish creatives rooted in Scandinavian functionalism. Volther’s work is characterized by a mastery of form, as evidenced by his iconic EJ5 Corona Chair for Erik Jørgensen. Volther’s designs have been produced by many design companies, such as Munch Furniture and Frem Røjle. His famous Corona Chair is considered his most memorable design contribution. It’s been featured in countless movies, fashion shoots, and music videos.

Many historical details about Danish furniture manufacturing company Frem Røjle are not readily verifiable. Evidence of the brand’s success in the postwar era, however, has survived through the range of chairs and tables found on the global vintage market today. These pieces exemplify the Danish midcentury modern style through fine teak and mahogany woods, sculptural silhouettes, tapered legs, and expert joinery.

Danish designer Hans Olsen designed many of Frem Røjle’s most sought-after pieces. Other standouts from the Frem Røjle line were created by Danish designer Poul Volther, especially his solid wood dining chairs.

The wooden frames of the stylish Danish chairs are in very nice condition and structurally sound. The paper cord seat pads also remain in tact. There are some slight marks to the seat pads. See photo for the 'worst' example. We haven't attempted to clean the paper cord. The marks may well come off or at least improve with gentle cleaning. Please request a video tour if you'd like any more detail.

    W46 x D46 x H78cm (Seat Height: 44cm)
