Description
A gorgeous mid-century modern chest of 6 drawers by Canadian furniture maker Malcolm Furniture of Kincardine, Ontario. The chest features long sculpted organic drawer pulls, and sleek Mid-Century lines. It offers ample room for storage with 6 deep drawers. This chest of drawers is a very solid and well built piece of vintage furniture and has a beautiful bow fronted shape. We’ve recently had the top of this piece refinished to a very high standard by a professional furniture restorer.
Malcolm Furniture was established by Andrew Malcolm who emigrated to Canada from Scotland. At the age of 22, in 1862, Malcolm travelled to Jamaica, working as a bookkeeper on a sugar plantation. He arrived in Ontario in 1867, where he found work in a general store, by way of the United States. In 1875, he moved to Kincardine, where he became a partner in a furniture business run by John Watson. The business expanded rapidly, increasing production capacity via mechanization. In 1895, Malcolm’s partner John Watson died. Malcolm’s two sons Andrew Jr. and James joined the business and it became the Andrew Malcolm Furniture Company. The Malcolm Furniture Company was well known for its high quality furniture. This piece probably dates to the mid-1960s. The company ceased trading in 1973.
